Sol- 11.3 The student will read and analyze relationships among
American literature, history, and culture.
Objective-
Students will describe the characteristics of Romanticism and supply examples of these characteristics that are found in The Scarlet Letter.
Strategies-
The teacher will make a presentation that outlines characteristics of the Romantic period in American literature. Students will be directed to make a two-column table in which the first column would be a listing of these characteristics with brief summations. At the end of this presentation, the teacher will present a passage from The Scarlet Letter that is an example of one of the characterstics of Romanticism. The students will tell the teacher which characteristic is represented and why.
Then the teacher will direct pairs of students to list in the second column passages that reflect the characteristics listed in the first column of the table. And then the pairs will share and discuss their findings with the rest of the class.
